I have a 2 part question about adding a new 'named' Virtual Server to an existing Clustered SQL Server 2000 install.
I have a 2 node MSCS Cluster (WIN2K advanced Server sp4) with a default SQL Server instance. This has been in production and working fine. I created a new Cluster resource and reran SQL Server 2000 ENT setup and added a second Virtual SQL Server (named instance). After many problems, finally got the second Server installed. Now I have 2 SQL Server instances in the Cluster - from what I understand, you can have up to 16, each seperate installs with seperate Cluster resources.
Thus the problem:
For the Second Instance, I have specific instructions from the Applications vendor on how to install SQL Server to work with their APP. I need install SQL Server WITHOUT the Full Text Search component and WITH a specific Server Collation (Binary order for use with the 850 Multilingual character set). (I have done this same setup on standalone SQL Server installations for this APP and they have gone smooth).
When I installed the new Virtual 'named' instance in my Cluster, I Could NOT 'DESELECT' Full Text Search when I choose Custom install.. it does not appear as an option?
Also, I chose the "Binary order for use with the 850 Multilingual character set" during the installation, but that is not the Server Collation that is installed...
I have already installed SP3 for SQL Server against the Virtual Server on this Cluster, as well as a HotFix... and Now I'm thinking I need to rerun the SQL Server installation, uninstall the second server and reinstall to see if I can fix the 'Collation problem' .. but I'm not sure if this is the right course of action.

Yes. it DOES have the same collation as the default instance!!! I had already checked the install logs and I did not see anything unusual. I DO see where it set the Server Collation in the install log, which is the sme collation as the default (original) server. I don't understand why if, in this kind of configuration you can have up to 16 SQL servers, why it would pull configuration settings from the first install??
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 298568 references a rebuildm.exe utility which will allow you to rebuild the master database with the correct collation.. I found a rebuildm.exe and rebuildm.rll in the 'program files' folder for the original 'default' install, but I cannot find these files in the second 'virtual server' program files folder.
When running the virtual server installation, it seemed pretty straight-forward. the only settings I changed were collation and the path for the program and data files (i put the data files on my new cluster resource drive) and I put the program files on the 'D' drive which is a fixed drive found on both nodes. it wanted to install the program files on the same drive as the original 'default' server. maybe I shouldn't have changed the program files setting??
I'm stumped!!!

Help! How to clustering SQL Server 2000 without Shared Disk?
hi all,
our company is going to setup ms sql server cluster for fault tolerance,
budget has to be kept minimum.
actaully, i was told that sql clustering (includes shared DB data sync)
can be done over a dedicated tcp/ip connection instead of using shared disk
array connected to the same scsi bus of 2 machines, however i could not even
configure cluster service on win2k server as there is no shared disk.
futhermore, i heard windows 2003 server can do it with no shared disk,
butr it can't be used for this purpose because of license issue.
i would to know if there is a way to cluster sql server nodes without a
shared disk array on windows 2000 adv/dc server + ms sql 2000 enterprise.
all advices are welcomed to reach chun_wail@.hotmail.com

SQL Server clustering depends on the Windows clustering service, so you have
no way to avoid the shared disk requirement - clustering is managed by the
OS, not by SQL Server. However, from what you say, I suspect you may be
thinking of replication, which is a totally different concept. Replication
allows you to keep data in sync between databases on different servers, but
it doesn't provide the failover support that clustering has.
I suggest you read the Books Online overviews on both clustering and
replication and see which suits your needs best. Log shipping might be
another option if a warm standby server is good enough for your purposes.
But if you really need high availability, you can't do it without a decent
budget and resources, so make sure you know exactly what the business
requirements are before you choose a solution.

Help!
I am trying to setup SQL server on MS Cluster Servers (with window 2003 OS).
I am always get following error during installation
"Setup failed to perform the required operation on the cluster nodes"
Base on sqlstp.log file (see below), it looks like cause by
10:35:07 C:\WINNT\TEMP\SqlSetup\Bin\remsetup.exe C:\WINNT\remsetup.ini
10:46:17 Process Exit Code: (2) The system cannot find the file specified.
Does anyone know how to solve this issue?

Have you tried coping the media onto the shared disk and running the install
from there? Have you already reboot both nodes? Make sure you reboot the
controlling node after any failure.
This should fix your issue.

firewall in between, local copy fixed it.

I think you hit the issue described in following article. Most often I have
seen this issue if the network connection name contains spaces or
parenthesis e.g. it should not be "Local Area Connection" or "Local Area
Connection 1" and should be something like "PUBLIC" or "PRIVATE". If this
does not solve the issue, you can try following other workarounds mentioned
in the article.

checked SQLSTPx.Log file, and find interesting things,

|||Was one system an upgrade from Win 2000 and another one built from scratch?
The C:\WINNT folder is the old name. Windows server 2003 uses C:\Windows as
the default system folder name. Setup expects a parallel folder structure
on all nodes.
Also, make sure your TMP and TEMP system variables are set on all nodes to a
valid folder. Finally, log into the console of each node using all accounts
involoved (Setup Launch, Cluster, and SQL Service accounts.

Have you tried coping the media onto the shared disk and running the install
from there? Have you already reboot both nodes? Make sure you reboot the
controlling node after any failure.

I think you hit the issue described in following article. Most often I have
seen this issue if the network connection name contains spaces or
parenthesis e.g. it should not be "Local Area Connection" or "Local Area
Connection 1" and should be something like "PUBLIC" or "PRIVATE". If this
does not solve the issue, you can try following other workarounds mentioned
in the article.

PRB: SQL Server 2000 Cluster Setup may fail to perform required operations
on the cluster nodes when special characters are used in the resource name

|||Was one system an upgrade from Win 2000 and another one built from scratch?
The C:\WINNT folder is the old name. Windows server 2003 uses C:\Windows as
the default system folder name. Setup expects a parallel folder structure
on all nodes.
Also, make sure your TMP and TEMP system variables are set on all nodes to a
valid folder. Finally, log into the console of each node using all accounts
involoved (Setup Launch, Cluster, and SQL Service accounts.
