HELP!...VB.NET killed SQL Server

Hi,
Yesterday I installed VB.NET on my machine. I had been runnng SQL Server
2000. After the install SQL Server will not run. SQLAgent fails with the
error "1068: The dependency service or group failed to start". When I try to
start MSSQL service I get a message it started then stopped because it may
not have anything to do.
I was planning to install SP3 of SQL Server 2000, so I tried that, but it
fails to install because (it seems) it needs SQL Server to be running.
Any ideas? Right now I desperately need SQL Server but not VB. So, I
guess my next move is to un-install VB.NET, which is going to be a royal
pain, and that may not even work because such a big install cannot be truly
uninstalled. After that I would fall back to an OS restore point.
Help, please!

Can you post the SQL Server errorlog file? Assuming it is only a few rows, of course...

After I install SP1 of SP2 for reporting services, I get the following

Standard edition.

Thanks,If you already installed SP2, you can not install SP1 afterwards and
you do not need to.
Service Packs are cumulative - they contain everything from prior
service packs.

Help! RS did not initialize on install and Rsactivate doesn't work

Hi,
When I installed RS, I received an error at the end stating that the server
could not be initialized and that I'd have to do it manually. So I tried
running the following and received the resulting error...
Rsactivate.exe -c "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Report
g Services\ReportServer\RSReportServer.config"
Failure starting the web service:
File or assembly name ReportingServicesNativeClient, or one of its dependencie
was not found.

HELP! Question about SQL Reporting Services Licensing

Hi,
I urgently need the answer to a question about SQL Reporting Services
licensing.
I need to install SQL Reporting Services on an IIS server that hasn't
got SQL Server installed on it. The Reporting Services database will
deliberately go on a remote SQL Server. I don't want to install SQL
Server on the IIS server - I just want to install SQL Reporting
Services and put in a valid SQL Server license code when prompted
during the setup. However, I can't seem to get a license code from
anywhere as our company has some sort of global agreement with
Microsoft which means we don't get to see the actual license codes.
I'm also told by our licensing guy that SQL Reporting Services isn't
on our Select CDs.
Has anyone else installed SQL Reporting Services on a server that
hasn't got SQL Server on it? If so, how did you do it? I'm genuinely
not after some giving me a dodgy license code - I want to pay for the
license, but I can't seem to get one through our company!!! :-<

point of going down to PC World to buy a copy of SQL Server, but I

I dont think you have to provide the SQL Server license
code while installing Reportinf services.
All you have to do is provide the name of the SQL Server
instance and you'll be on your way to installing RS.

I've recently implemented SQL Reporting Services on our server, and
here is what I found out.
Reporting Services rides on the SQL Server license. If you install
Reporting Services on a machine with SQL Server, it's no extra cost.
If you install RS on a non SQL machine, all you have to do is purchase
the SQL Server license to cover RS on the non SQL machine.
In our organization, it was included in the Select agreement. I don't
know if we have a different select package than you do though. I did
not need the SQL Server Serial Key to install reporting services, just
notified our IT Software shop that I needed to purchase the additional
license and cut the proper forms.
So all you should have to do is let your IT shop know you need the
licensing to cover an installation of SQL server on your IIS web
server, don't install SQL Server on it, but install SQL Server
Reporting Services onto your IIS server.

I think my problem came partly from only previously having used an
MSDN version of SQL Reporting Services (which does prompt for a
license code), and partly from being told by the licensing guy in my
company that SQL Reporting Services isn't on the Select CDs.
I'll go back to the licensing guy and ask him to find it on the Select
CDs.

Problem:
I just went through the instructions for " Installing the Oracle9i
Database[1]". My problem is that I don't remember the passwords I created
and I'm following the instructions for loggin in... I am failing
miserably. Panicing..
I can see the id in the logs.
Will the password be in the Logs?
C:\Program Files\Oracle\Inventory\logs\installActions2005-10-09_04-22-59PM
Any ideas(Resolutions)'

I'm afraid this is not Oracle group. This is MS SQL Server group.
Look for comp.database.oracle subgroups.
It's not a client application issue, so do not post it in client
subgroups.
As far as I know there's no way to get that password, but there
may be a way to log in without that password and to reset that
password to a new one (there is in Oracle 8i), but I do not know how.
You could probably also try uninstalling the server and reinstalling it.

HELP! New Virtual Server in existing Cluster

I have a 2 part question about adding a new 'named' Virtual Server to an existing Clustered SQL Server 2000 install.

I have a 2 node MSCS Cluster (WIN2K advanced Server sp4) with a default SQL Server instance. This has been in production and working fine. I created a new Cluster resource and reran SQL Server 2000 ENT setup and added a second Virtual SQL Server (named instance). After many problems, finally got the second Server installed. Now I have 2 SQL Server instances in the Cluster - from what I understand, you can have up to 16, each seperate installs with seperate Cluster resources.
Thus the problem:

For the Second Instance, I have specific instructions from the Applications vendor on how to install SQL Server to work with their APP. I need install SQL Server WITHOUT the Full Text Search component and WITH a specific Server Collation (Binary order for use with the 850 Multilingual character set). (I have done this same setup on standalone SQL Server installations for this APP and they have gone smooth).

When I installed the new Virtual 'named' instance in my Cluster, I Could NOT 'DESELECT' Full Text Search when I choose Custom install.. it does not appear as an option?

Also, I chose the "Binary order for use with the 850 Multilingual character set" during the installation, but that is not the Server Collation that is installed...

I have already installed SP3 for SQL Server against the Virtual Server on this Cluster, as well as a HotFix... and Now I'm thinking I need to rerun the SQL Server installation, uninstall the second server and reinstall to see if I can fix the 'Collation problem' .. but I'm not sure if this is the right course of action.

Yes. it DOES have the same collation as the default instance!!! I had already checked the install logs and I did not see anything unusual. I DO see where it set the Server Collation in the install log, which is the sme collation as the default (original) server. I don't understand why if, in this kind of configuration you can have up to 16 SQL servers, why it would pull configuration settings from the first install??

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 298568 references a rebuildm.exe utility which will allow you to rebuild the master database with the correct collation.. I found a rebuildm.exe and rebuildm.rll in the 'program files' folder for the original 'default' install, but I cannot find these files in the second 'virtual server' program files folder.

When running the virtual server installation, it seemed pretty straight-forward. the only settings I changed were collation and the path for the program and data files (i put the data files on my new cluster resource drive) and I put the program files on the 'D' drive which is a fixed drive found on both nodes. it wanted to install the program files on the same drive as the original 'default' server. maybe I shouldn't have changed the program files setting??

It is obvious that there is some other setting that must be applied in

that are related to MS SQL Server.
Unfortunately, our fall back is to install SQL Server to run as
Administrator - because that works.

Help! How to install Sql Svr 2k to Win2k3 Least Privilege Acct?

We are trying to install SQLSever2000 on a Windows 2003 Standard Server to a

account other than Administrator.
We used this guide (which works fine for Win2k Svr)

We get an Error 5: Access Denied message when starting SQL Server Agent, but
we don't get enough information to determine what has been denied.
It is obvious that there is some other setting that must be applied in
WinSvr 2k3 that we are not doing - but we didn't see it in the guide. We hav

attempted to give the "SQLAdmin" account access to all files and directories
that are related to MS SQL Server.
Unfortunately, our fall back is to install SQL Server to run as
Administrator - because that works.
Any ideas/info is greatly appreciated.

Server. Check your event logs, SQL errorlogs and SQL Agent logs for
additional information.
Use SQL Enterprise Manager whenever possible to change the start-up account
for SQL Server and SQL Agent services. SEM will set file and registry
permissions whereas Service Control Manager won't.
Most importantly, ensure that non-admin start-up accounts have following
user privileges:
. Act as Part of the Operating System = SeTcbPrivilege
. Bypass Traverse Checking = SeChangeNotify
. Lock Pages In Memory = SeLockMemory
. Log on as a Batch Job = SeBatchLogonRight
. Log on as a Service = SeServiceLogonRight
. Replace a Process Level Token = SeAssignPrimaryTokenPrivilege

HELP! EM wont connect after apply sp3a,reporting services and VS.net 2003

Install SQL 2000 on a completelyu up to date windows 2003 advanced server,
then applied sp3a, then a installed reporting service developer addition,
then installed VS .net 2003 the reinstalled reporting services to get the
Report Developer.
Now I can't connect to the Server using EM.
Get SQL_alloc_handle on SQL_handle_env failed.
Tried all types of registrations.
Any suggestions short of starting from scratch?Make an ODBC trace of the connection attempt & open a case with the Webdata
team. They handle the MDAC problems with SQL.

HELP! Case insensitive database on case sensitive server

We need to install CI database on CS server, and there are some issues
with stored procedures.

Database works and have CI collation (Polish_CI_AS). Server has
coresponding CS collation (Polish_CS_AS). Most queries and procedures
works but some does not :-(

We have table Customer which contains field CustomerID.

Query "SELECT CUSTOMERID FROM CUSTOMER" works OK regardless of
character case (we have table Customer not CUSTOMER)

Following TSQL generate error message that must declare variable @.id
(in lowercase)

DECLARE @.ID INT (here @.ID in uppercase)
SELECT @.id=CustomerID FROM Customer WHERE ... (here @.id in lowercase)

I know @.ID is not equal to @.id in CS, but database is CI and table
names Customer and CUSTOMER both works. This does not work for
variables.

I suppose it is tempdb collation problem (CS like a server collation
is). I tried a property "Identifier Case Sensitivity" for my
connection, but it is read only and have value 8 (Mixed) by default -
this is OK I think.

I will have to admit that I was under the impression that it was the
database collation that controlled the sensitivity of variables,
but apparently it is the system collation, so it appears that you
will have to install a case-insensitive instance, assuming that the
code you have problems with is in stored procedures.

that is licensing problem on MS SQL.
It is OK on MSDE, but You have to pay for license for full MS SQL.

I cannot change code of database (stored procedures, functions, etc.)
but I can modify code in client application. I can chenge connection
parameters and database access methods.

May be there are some database or connection parameters that I can

Is that really so? But licensing is definitely nothing I know well, so
I assume that you know what you are talking about.

Apparently not. (And a connetion parameter would be bad a bad idea,
since that could permit you stored a procedure that another process
would not be able to compile.)

version of SQL Server and let him do his work.
Unfortunately, it appears he didn't use my copy of SQL, he downloaded and
used the 120 day evaluation version of SQL which has now expired.
Does anyone know if I can simply uninstall the 120 day eval version of SQL,
install the Full version and the copy over the raw data and log files? I am
unable to do a normal backup and restore since the Eval services won't
start.
Please help!
