HELP!...VB.NET killed SQL Server

Hi,
Yesterday I installed VB.NET on my machine. I had been runnng SQL Server
2000. After the install SQL Server will not run. SQLAgent fails with the
error "1068: The dependency service or group failed to start". When I try to
start MSSQL service I get a message it started then stopped because it may
not have anything to do.
I was planning to install SP3 of SQL Server 2000, so I tried that, but it
fails to install because (it seems) it needs SQL Server to be running.
Any ideas? Right now I desperately need SQL Server but not VB. So, I
guess my next move is to un-install VB.NET, which is going to be a royal
pain, and that may not even work because such a big install cannot be truly
uninstalled. After that I would fall back to an OS restore point.
Help, please!

Can you post the SQL Server errorlog file? Assuming it is only a few rows, of course...

|||Thanks! I ran the SQL Server setup program with the option "Rebuild
Registry" and now it seems fine. Thanks again!

cheers OK, wait a minute. You installed the enterprise edition of the MSSQL Service on a XP prof ? This is not possible. What did you actually delete, where and what did you try to achieve ?

yes it it is possible, the only thing is that you do not have access to all the functionality.i have solved the prob by uninstalling and installing the work edition.

|||Sorry to correct you, but installing SQL Server services won′t be available for enterprise edition, only the client tools.

Help!! i deleted mssqlserver services

I have installed Sql Server 2005 on my machine. I've managed to created report, but when i try to deploy e same, I'm getting e following error...am i missing something here? Idea

The report server has encountered a configuration error. See the report server log files for more information. (rsServerConfigurationError) Access to the path 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.4\Reporting Services\ReportServer\RSReportServer.config' is denied.

when i checked in msdn..there it says

Can you access Report Manager via Internet Explorer (http://server/reports) at all? Or does it throw the same/similar error?

It sounds to me like the account that SSRS is running under doesn't have the proper NTFS perms on the 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.4\Reporting Services\ReportServer\' folder. Verify that that it does, or use the filemon tool from sysinternals.com to capture a log of what process (and which account) is getting denied...this will give you most of the info you'd need to fix the issue.

I experienced the problem described above and the filemon tool identified that the ASPNET user did not have read privileges to the .config file.

It seems strange that the server installation did not configure this correctly.. Setting privileges manually solved the problem..

Add ASPNET user to SQLServer2005Reporting ServicesWebServiceUsers$<MACHINE NAME> group, reboot your machine and it should start working properly.

You should be able to fix this as well by using the Report Server Configuration tool to set the web service identity.

I am having similar issue trying to launch report services by http://localhost/reports. I got the following error

when try to launch it.

The report server is not responding. Verify that the report server is running and can be accessed from this computer.

I used the Reporting Services Configuration tool to set all my virtual directory and etc... and verified that the report server is initiated and running. I have read other thread for similar issue, but none was able to provide a clear solution on how to resolve the problem. Any help would be appriciated.

Look in your log files and see if there is a detailed error message there. That's your best place to start.

I've look at the log file and it didn't help me much. Maybe you can point me to the right direction.

By the way, I am running Vista and using the Server 2005 eval edition. I don't know if this make any differences. I still couldn't get it took work for me. Any help would be greatly appriciate. The error i get is as follow when try to launch the report service using http://localhost/reports:

If you're running on Vista, you must install SQL Server SP2. Here are some KB articles that should help you out.

|||I had a similar problem. It turned out that since I had a named instance of SQL Server 2005 I had to reference that in the url. Specifically, it was http://localhost/ReportServer$NAMEOFSQLSERVERINSTANCE

If you're running on Vista, you must install SQL Server SP2. Here are some KB articles that should help you out.

Help!! "The report server has encountered a configuration error........"

Hi There,

I have installed Sql Server 2005 on my machine. I've managed to created report, but when i try to deploy e same, I'm getting e following error...am i missing something here? Idea

Other info:

I have followed the Tutorial Project in SQL Books online. And for TargetURL, i have given --> http://localhost/reportserver

Report server is located in my local only

rsreportserver.config : I dint touch this file and mine is fresh installation. Sad

Can you access Report Manager via Internet Explorer (http://server/reports) at all? Or does it throw the same/similar error?

I experienced the problem described above and the filemon tool identified that the ASPNET user did not have read privileges to the .config file.

It seems strange that the server installation did not configure this correctly.. Setting privileges manually solved the problem..

Add ASPNET user to SQLServer2005Reporting ServicesWebServiceUsers$<MACHINE NAME> group, reboot your machine and it should start working properly.

You should be able to fix this as well by using the Report Server Configuration tool to set the web service identity.

I am having similar issue trying to launch report services by http://localhost/reports. I got the following error

when try to launch it.

The report server is not responding. Verify that the report server is running and can be accessed from this computer.

Look in your log files and see if there is a detailed error message there. That's your best place to start.

Help! Sql Server 2005 kicked my Sql Server 7s You-Know-What

Life is not good.

So I've got a machine that I do some development work on, nothing
major, but I'd like to keep some things intact. I'm running SQL Server
7, it's an old installation, but it works and I've got a number of
databases on it.

So I see the new 2005 Express downloads and I download the Web
Developer edition, install it, it installs 2005, but my SQL Server 7
installation now seems to be hosed.

The SQL Server Service Manager still shows SQL Server 7 starting and
running, but the Enterprise Manager can no longer connect, it gives a
vague "General Error" message even though the sqlservr.exe process is
still running. It was not able to connect upon installing the other
products.

I've de-installed the new Express stuff and now just have my trusty
VS2003 installation. Everything seems fine except nothing can talk to
the database, which makes sense since the database now doesn't even
show up on the Enterprise Manager. The Application node of the Event
Log shows no errors coming from SQLServer. But when I try to connect
or re-register a database I get: "Server registration information
cannot be changed on remote registries"

Nothing like this has even vaguely happened to me before. Is there
anyone with any constructive advice? I'd be grateful.

DMO and when it uninstalls DMO is de-registered but it does not put back the
old one.

try the following:

regsvr32 SQLDMO.dll you can find the file in the SQL Server 7 directory.

Yup, this did it, mostly. Thank you, I appreciate your help!
Enterprise Manager still isn't quite behaving the way it used to. It
doesn't show the database "coming on" after a moment and I have to
force it to connect. But it does connect and at least I can access my
databases, so this was a huge help.

I suppose it's likely there are some other DLLs that were unregistered
and that need to be re-registered, so I'll check that possibility out
and perhaps my old functionality will be restored.

Help! Need to migrate Windows 2000 Server/SQL Server to Windows 2003 Advanced Server/SQL A

We have existing machine runing Windows 2000 Server and SQL Server
2000. We will be buying a larger machine and would like to migrate all
data/processes/DTSs/jobs into new machine which will be running
Windows 2003 Advanced Server + SQL 2000 Advanced Server edition.
Our goal is not only preserve all jobs/data/packages but also leve the
same name of the SQL server.
How can we do that? are there any reliable recepies?
