Help! Newbie

Situation: 1st time using Oracle for a training class. 1st install
Problem:
I just went through the instructions for " Installing the Oracle9i
Database[1]". My problem is that I don't remember the passwords I created
and I'm following the instructions for loggin in... I am failing
miserably. Panicing..
I can see the id in the logs.
Will the password be in the Logs?
C:\Program Files\Oracle\Inventory\logs\installActions2005-10-09_04-22-59PM
Any ideas(Resolutions)'

I'm afraid this is not Oracle group. This is MS SQL Server group.
Look for comp.database.oracle subgroups.
It's not a client application issue, so do not post it in client
subgroups.
As far as I know there's no way to get that password, but there
may be a way to log in without that password and to reset that
password to a new one (there is in Oracle 8i), but I do not know how.
You could probably also try uninstalling the server and reinstalling it.

Yeah - stop spamming groups that have nothing to do with Oracle. I just
saw that you posted the same message to yet another two SQL Server

HELP! Data Conversion Rounding Problem

I have a somehwat odd situation. I have a field on table A defined as
float. It is being written to a varchar(15) field on table B. If the
field on A is NULL I want the field on B to be '0'. It cannot have
two decimal places. It must be a single character of zero.
If the field in table A is a number, it must be written to table B as
the same number. Here are some examples:
A B
NULL 0
123.45 123.45
555.70 555.7
35444.21 35444.21 <-- This is what I want
35444.79 35444.79 <-- This is what I want
My problem is with the last two. Any amount > 9,999.99 rounds the
second decimal value. So in the example above I get this (which is
wrong):

NULL 0
123.45 123.45
555.70 555.7
35444.21 35444.2 <-- This is wrong
35444.79 35444.8 <-- This is wrong
I've tried multiple way of using CONVERT and CAST. When I use decimal
or money I get the two decimal places for all values correct. However,
now my '0' turns into '0.00' (which is wrong). I need it to not have
the two decimal places.
Any suggestions?Separate presentation from data. SQL Server returns data values and the value 0 is the same as the
value 0.00. The client application presents the binary values returned by SQL Server in a
human-readable form (like number with decimal points). If you didn't write the client app yourself,
i.e., if you use something like QA, SSMS, OSQL, ISQL, SQLCMD, Reporting Services, etc, then these
tools will present the values according to the datatype *for the column'. I.e., a tool might assume
that the money datatype will be presented with two decimals. Or 4. IT is the person writing the too
who makes these decision, but it applies to all values for the column. The only way to not being at
the mercy of the tool vendor is to convert to strings, but that will lead to some potentially
lengthy CASE expressions in the SELECT statement. So, my suggestion is to handle this in the client
app. All client app designed for end users has functionality for formatting data (like for instance
a format() function).

Unfortunately, handling this at the UI end is not an option. I'm
converting an app (from Access). I need the data to be exactly the
same. I unable to change the UI at this time.|||Plus, I would like to know why SQL Server is rounding that value. To

being what sometime is called an approximate datatype. So, it seems that when SQL Server converts
from float to varchar, you see some funny things. I would suggest you cast to something else, like
decimal And if you *really* want to do presentation logic in the engine, you can convert NULL to 0,
cast to varchar, then replace '0.00' with 0. See below:
INSERT INTO z ([c1])
SELECT CASE WHEN c = '0.00' THEN '0' ELSE c END
FROM

HELP! -- SQL Server 2005 from 2000

SB-RSure. Connect with Query Analyzer. It can do everything that Enterprise
Manager can -- you just need to use T-SQL to do it.
By the way, it seems that some of the newsgroups are not as relevant to this
question as others (olap, for example).

HELP! ODBC becoming unusable

Here goes: We have situation at a customer site where users are suddenly unable to connect to SQL 2K via ASP using ODBC via DSN. While the customer is in this state, our Windows clients, which connect using OLE DB (ADO) to the same DB as the ASP, seem to be connecting without problems. Therefore, the problem seems to be with ODBC.

Additional details about the problem site:
SQL ODBC 3.50
Win2K Server SP 4.
SQL2k SP2.
MDAC 2.62
<100 users total
Moderate usage of our ASP interface

Note: SQL2k and IIS are on the same LAN-side server.

FYI: Another part of the problem is that I'm a developer and am not that familiar with the tools available to help me troubleshoot this kind of problem.

We've tried using Perfmon to monitor connection pooling, but nothing stood-out.

We've tried using netstat (with various switches), but nothing stood-out.

That's some great information! But won't this only trace activity across an open connection (implicit or explicit)? If so, I'm not sure it'll help because the problems is that at some point, the ASP are simply unable to connect via DSN using ODBC.

Given that it's as though SQL is simply inaccessable via the DSN, even when the ADO OLE DB client app is connecting fine, we've been speculating (with help from Microsoft) that the problem is with ODBC's connection pooling. We've tried to set-up performance logging of connection pooling in-house in an effort to determine it's potential usefulness to our scenario in production, but our in-house graphs show no activity...probably due to the relatively low activity in our development environment. We walked the customer through setting it up on their server anyhow.

Just recently, the problem occurred again on the customer's server. Before they could reboot the server, we took the opportunity to run NETSTAT to view the sockets for clues, but there were less than 20 results. Possibly because they have SQL and IIS on the same server?

This sucks because all we want to do is get an idea of how to duplicate the problem in a controlled environment so we can either a) adjust our ASP accordingly or b) give them a solution that we know addresses the problem.

Help! - DTS/Job Task (SQL Server 2000)

Hello all,
I have this situation, I have a DTS package consisting of a series of data
transformations and data transfers from our server to remote servers. If I
execute the DTS from the Data Transformation Services --> Local Packages, it
runs smoothly without any problems. But, when I schedule that same DTS
package and have SQL (Server 2000) run it as a task on a daily manner it
runs "successfully" (according to SQL) but when I see the job history I see
that no records were transferred even though it says "successfully" (which,
obviously, isn't)
So, my question is, what could be causing that a DTS package running from a
Job Task transfers no records and when I run it directly from Data
Transformation Services --> Local Packages, it transfers the right data
(between 180 and 200 records depending on the day, but NEVER 0 records)
is it permissions? it it something else? (btw, my DTS package doesn't need
parameters or anything like that)

client machine. However, the package runs on the sever when launched via a
job. Perhaps this is reason for the difference.

I came across a similar problem when I was moving data from sever A to
server B. I was able to fix this by adding a lag between when the data
was available in server A and when it got pulled by the job into
server B. This may or may not solve your problem but its worth a try.

I know that, that's why when I run it (I should've specified this in my
previous message) I use remote desktop, so I'm running "locally" from within
the same server the job task must run.

rights of your remote desktop login are being used but when the dts job is
executed by a job it uses whatever the permissions of the sqlagent are

Help!

Are you guys here just to criticize ppl. Try to understand my situation. My prof. yells at everyone that asks for help. He discourages the students, the book is no help, and I HAVE NO MONEY LEFT TO SPEND 50 BUCKS ON A BOOK!!!!!!!Hello,

the best way to learn PL/SQL is to do it on your own. Anyway, here is my suggestion.

Peter with respect - I don't think you do understand my post. I am not (nor have I ever been) an employee of Quest Software. Rather I am lucky enough to administer the 100% free Quest PL/SQL Pipeline Webboard with others by invitation of Quest and I contribute of my time on a strictly no-benefit basis (thanks for taking the time to check that out, btw.). And yes we do strongly encourage testing of ALL posts - why on earth wouldn't you?

Also I'm afraid I still do not understand your standpoint in this thread. If you feel that the poster should learn this himself, why post a complete answer? There are plenty of other options. When I tell my son not to smoke I appreciate that he must make his own decision but I will not be finishing the lecture by handing out cigarettes and matches and neither would I tolerate someone else doing it either, which I guess is why I replied.
